What Happens During Formal Recruitment?

The Recruitment Process is one of the most pivotal and formative parts of your journey with Gamma Sigma Sigma. After all, this is where it all begins! The time spent during Formal Recruitment participating in service projects and getting to know our sisterhood provides potential new members (PNMs) with the chance to connect with a diverse group of peers, discover a shared love of service, and find a new home within a community that offers support and acceptance for all. The events of this week take you through each aspect of our unique sisterhood, going beyond the surface to allow PNMs to explore our rich history and strong commitment to service. It is during this time that the seeds of friendship are sowed and a sense of belonging is established. These connections extend past these initial days and into our vast futures, shaping the course of each current and future member's collegiate experience and beyond. We cannot wait to meet you and introduce you to Gamma Sigma Sigma, where we make lasting memories and form the strongest of bonds through service to others.

Fall 2024 Recruitment Schedule

Tabling & Informal Events

In the weeks before Formal Recruitment, the sisters of Gamma Sigma Sigma will hold a tabling event in CUB (Bullet Hole). Visit the table for more information about Gamma Sigma Sigma and Recruitment! The sisters may also hold an informal interest event. While these are not mandatory, they are a great way to get to know the current members! See our social media for more information closer to Recruitment Week.

The Week Before Recruitment

Information Sessions

  • Friday, Sept. 6:

    • 6-8 PM (Mara Auditorium)

  • Saturday Sept. 7:

    • 1-3 PM (Virtual)

    • 6-8 PM (Mara Auditorium)

At these sessions, PNMs will get a brief overview of who we are and what we do. During this meeting, we will also make clear the time commitments PNMs will need to make if they receive and accept a Bid. This includes academic and conduct requirements, time commitments, and financial information. These sessions also provide PNMs with the opportunity to ask any initial questions they may have. It is strongly recommended that PNMs attend one of these sessions. PNMs should wear Brunch Attire.

Service Nights

On Service Night, PNMs have the opportunity to experience an on-campus service project while learning more about all of the amazing work that the sisters of Gamma Sigma Sigma do across the nation. During these events, current members will go into greater detail about what service means to them and the different types of service we do. This night focuses on Gamma Sigma Sigma’s National Service Partners, Project I.M.P.A.C.T., and the service projects in which the Gettysburg College Colony participates in the local community. PNMs will have the opportunity to participate in a different service project each night. The sisters ask that PNMs try to attend at least one (1) service night, and PNMs may choose to attend both if space is available. PMNs should dress casually for these events.

  • Monday, Sept. 9

    • 8-10 PM (Glatfelter Lodge)

  • Tuesday, Sept. 10

    • 8-10 PM (Glatfelter Lodge)

Friendship Nights

This is the last open recruitment event before Bid Day. The Friendship Night during Formal Recruitment allows PNMs to speak more with the members about the more social aspects of membership in Gamma Sigma Sigma. This includes discussions about the sisterhood events we hold and what the values and ideals of the sorority mean to current members. During this event, PNMs will have a chance to speak to each current member and ask any final questions they have before Bids are extended on Saturday, Sept. 14. Because of this, it is recommended that PNMs attend one (1) of these events, and due to time and space constraints, PNMs should only attend one (1) session. PNMs should dress in Brunch Attire.

  • Wednesday, Sept. 11

    • 8-10 PM (Glatfelter Lodge)

  • Thursday, Sept. 12

    • 8-10 PM (Glatfelter Lodge)

Bid Day

Formal Recruitment culminates in an event known as Bid Day. This is the day PNMs who receive Bids are informally welcomed into the sorority. During this day, they will bond with their member class and active members, and they will learn more about membership in Gamma Sigma Sigma. For some, this is one of the most memorable days of Recruitment because it celebrates the beginning of lifelong friendships built through service to others. It represents the first step of an exciting journey of service and sisterhood.

Each PNM will receive an email by 10 AM on the morning of Bid Day telling them whether they received a Bid. Gamma Sigma Sigma also reserves the right to extend Bids after Bid Day but before Ritual if necessary. Please note that PNMs are not guaranteed a Bid. The dress code is casual. Floral bottoms and accessories are encouraged to fit the theme of Recruitment.

Saturday, Sept. 14

6-10 PM (Glatfelter Lodge)

What is a Recruitment Guide?

When you register for Formal Recruitment, you will be given a Recruitment Guide. Recruitment Guides are current members who act as a resource for the PNMs.

They should:

  • Address any concerns that PNMs have in a way that respects their privacy or direct them to someone who can.

  • Provide support and encouragement throughout Formal Recruitment.

  • Ensure PNMs are aware of any changes or event cancellations in a timely manner.

  • Answer any questions PNMs have about dress codes, events, and other topics related to Recruitment.

  • Empower PNMs to make informed decisions about joining Gamma Sigma Sigma in conjunction with other current members.

  • Foster inclusivity throughout Recruitment together with other current members.

  • Uphold the sorority’s ideals of Service, Friendship, and Equality at all times.
