What Happens When I Join Gamma Sig?

1. Recruitment

The first step in your Gamma Sig journey is to go through a process known as Recruitment. This is a fun and exciting time where you formally show interest in joining our sisterhood!

A Note About
Our Recruitment Process

As a service sorority, Gamma Sig operates differently in our Recruitment process than many other sororities. The purpose of our Recruitment is to bring together individuals with a passion for service and philanthropy and an interest in the possibility of joining our sisterhood to learn more about who we are and what we stand for. The events that take place during this time emphasize the values and ideals of our sorority and serve to help potential new members (PNMs) get to know Gamma Sig. Additionally, Recruitment gives us a chance to get to know PNMs and their commitment to the values of our sorority. Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, Inc. was founded on and is still committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and therefore, we as an organization offer membership to individuals of all backgrounds so long as they demonstrate a dedication to our sorority's values and ideals.

Commitments & Responsibilities

Weekly Time Commitment

As a Member-in-Training (MIT), you will be expected to attend:

  • MIT Meetings: Once a week for 6-8 weeks, approximately one hour long. These meetings help MITs learn more about Gamma Sig and how we operate as a colony.

  • General Meetings: Monthly. These meetings typically last about an hour and focus on Colony business, such as service projects, upcoming events, fundraisers, etc.

After you become an active member in the sorority, you are only expected to attend the Colony Meetings. The meeting time is selected via a poll at the beginning of each semester, and each member may have 4 excused absences and 2 unexcused absences per semester. If a member has a scheduling conflict, such as a class or lab, with the meeting time, she is expected to reach out to the president or corresponding secretary as soon as possible.

Our Stance on Hazing

Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, Inc. is a non-hazing sorority and has a strict no-hazing policy, and any members with credible accusations of hazing are expelled immediately. Our members do not tolerate hazing of any kind. We strive to create a community of sisters built on friendship and service, and hazing has no place here. The Sorority holds every member accountable to all policies and procedures that the National Board has established, and adherence is both mandatory and the personal responsibility of all members and colonies/chapters. Hazing, underage and/or binge drinking, and drug usage are strictly prohibited. When these unlawful acts occur, they have significant consequences for all of us, including sisters, parents, universities, and the National Organization.

Abuse of others through actions such as hazing directly contradicts the ideals and values of the Sorority. When colonies/chapters are found to disregard national alcohol, hazing, and/or drug use policies, they will receive a Cease & Desist letter, as well as an emergency visit from the National Board to promote risk reduction and educational programs to change behaviors. Colonies/chapters found in violation of any policies will also face disciplinary sanctions, which can result in charter inactivation. For more information, please see the National Board of Directors' Statement on hazing here.
